A draft technical report released late last year titled Managing Wombats proposed, amongst other things, reclassifying wombats in the ACT as a Controlled Native Species, a classification that would allow for the authorisation of shooting wombats by leaseholders. This raises serious animal welfare concerns, not just about the direct killing of wombats, but also about orphaning dependent young and failed shots leading to wounded and suffering, but still alive, wombats.
The Greens are supporting a petition to reject that proposal and ensure that the ACT's treatment of wombats remains non-lethal. To that end, we will be collecting signatures in Garema Pl in the City on Saturday 2 May from 10 am to 12 midday, and we would love if you could come along to help us out. No experience is needed, but we do appreciate if you can do some quick background research beforehand. We hope to see you there!
