Across Canberra we've seen a lot of piecemeal protections—which is why species like the Canberra Earless Dragon is on the edge of extinction, and why we've seen government at both levels choose developments over our city's ecologically valuable grasslands.
Our guest speaker is Dr Sophie Lewis, a climate scientist at the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility, and was the previous ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment.
She presented some damning reports to wake up the ACT Government to properly fund nature initiatives and protect our natural environment from destruction.
Her Close to the Edge report found that the environment is rarely prioritised by governments and that spending on the environment at all jurisdictional levels is demonstrably inadequate.
Frustratingly, the government's response to how they'll address the issues raised in the report is missing in action - as is their climate strategy, despite Labor missing the ACT's legislative emissions reduction target.
There seems to be no urgency, no plan and no ambition while Canberra's wildlife and environment suffers.
It does not spark joy, so what can people do about it?
We'll discuss what the ACT Greens plans are to get government to take the climate and biodiversity crisis seriously and how you can get involved!
