Remember, remember the 4th of November, democracy, reason and lot. I see no reason why democratic reason should ever be forgot.*
The original reasoning on democracy meant sortition (it's fine if you don't know what that is... yet).
The Queensland Greens Participatory Democracy Circle is hosting a forum on sortition, the original democracy and, it will be argued, still the best.
Of all the big alternatives in democracy you should know about, like proportional representation, or direct democracy, or liquid democracy, sortition is perhaps the least well known, but you should definitely know about and keep it in the mix of ideas to be applied as solutions.
So if the idea that you could throw a dart and hit somebody better than the average politician doesn't seem entirely farfetched to you then come along and give sortition a fair hearing with an open mind.
The forum will be held online on Tuesday 4th November, 7pm.
In the spirit of mutual education, this discussion will kick off with a presentation from QLD Greens member Neil Cotter before moving into a Q&A followed by a general discussion.
This event is open to anyone with an interest in participatory democracy. Moderators reserve the right to eject attendees who are disruptive or intentionally derailing the conversation.
Please register via this website and you’ll be emailed a link to the Zoom call (we only need your email address - phone number and other details are optional)
*Yes this is a play on the "Remember, remember, the 5th of November" rhyme, a reference to the attempt by Guy Fawkes to blow up parliament that was considered to be a less than ideal alternative democratic reform.
