Hi Canberra! Let’s talk disability pride.
But what is disability pride? If you’re new to the concept, disability pride is a movement that celebrates disabled people and the strength of our community.
Disability pride comes from a process of self-acceptance and letting go of learned shame.
Having disability pride doesn’t mean that you are happy about all the challenges that ableism causes you. But it does mean that you accept yourself, you’re proud of who you are and you’re proud of the community you belong to.
Join Australian Greens Senator and spokesperson for Disability Rights and Services Jordon Steel-John, ACT Greens Minister for Disability, Emma Davidson, and other ACT disability advocates at the Sue Salthouse Community Centre for a discussion about what we can achieve together when we are uncompromisingly, fearlessly, proudly ourselves!
We will be hosting a BBQ at the centre following the panel discussion and performance by Daydream machine. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.
The Sue Salthouse Community Centre has compliant ground levels to support wheelchair access and two all-ability, gender sensitive bathrooms. You can find more information about the Centre’s facilities here: https://www.northside.asn.au/
Masks will be available for use upon entry and chairs will be spaced-out to minimise the risks posed by COVID-19.
We respectfully request that all attendees be as fragrance free as possible by not wearing perfume, aftershave, cologne, fragranced lotions, fragranced deodorant, fragranced hair products, and/or similar products. This will help to protect the health and well-being of attendees who are allergic and/or sensory sensitive to fragrances and chemicals.
Registration for this event is free.
If you have any questions, please contact Davidson@act.gov.au.
